A very good start to 2018 for Latics. Another clean sheet, Nick Powell goal and an away win. Blackburn dropped points again, 88th minute equaliser from Rotherham too which makes it all that sweeter, however Shrewsbury beat Oldham 1-0 to remain two points behind us.

Paul Cook made just one change from Friday’s 0-0 draw with Charlton, bringing Reece James back in at left-back to replace Callum Elder.

Latics made the perfect start and took the lead in five minutes. Gavin Massey done well on the right, and delivered a perfect cross for Powell to head home for his 11th of the season.

Brendan Moloney cleared Will Grigg’s effort off the line, while Chey Dunkley’s header came back off the crossbar, in a first half we dominated.

The hosts came into the game in the second half, and Chris Long’s long-range strike whistled past the post.

Grigg had another opportunity to double our lead but couldn’t find the target.

Latics defended well in the final stages, and held on for a solid 0-1 to resume winning ways. A break from the league now and a good-looking tie away at Bournemouth coming up on Saturday.

Although, looking ahead the next round of fixtures in League One is the biggest yet. Blackburn vs Shrewsbury and Wigan vs Peterborough. A win could see us 10 points clear of third place, surely promotion secured?
