Weekends don’t come much better than this. A very good away win, Shrewsbury losing and us returning to the top of the league with a two point cushion. What a response following that Bradford defeat, six goals in two games. Cook deserves a huge amount of credit, he recognised we had been flat in our previous games, made four changes to the side and they’ve certainly payed off.

Alex Bruce replacing the suspended Dan Burn was the only change to Latics’ side that beat Doncaster 3-0 in midweek.

We took the lead on 14 minutes when Will Grigg got his long-awaited goal (as I predicted in the preview, also said 1-3). Lee Evans whipped in a dangerous free-kick for Grigg to glance into the near post.

The lead didn’t last long as the home side hit back through a great strike from David Ball.

Bruce (of all people) then produced an outrageous back-heel finish to give us the lead again, reminded me of Boycey’s against Swansea a few years back. Judging by the players celebrations, it certainly took them by surprise too.

The three points were wrapped up when Michael Jacobs netted for the second time in as many games. Grigg was initially denied superbly by The Millers’ ‘keeper, but Max Power rolled it back to Crackers who smashed it low into the corner.

Ryan Colclough was very dangerous again, and he almost added a fourth late on, only to see his effort cleared off the line.

It was the perfect away performance. Once we adapted to Rotherham’s long ball tactics they rarely threatened, up the other end we counter attacked with quality and conviction. The quality into the box was much better, which hopefully continues for a returning to form Grigg. Power looks a completely different player in the number 10 role, will Nick Powell return to the side on Friday?

Onto Fylde,

Up the tics.
