A club record win, hat-trick for Will Grigg and top at Christmas by four points. Merry Christmas to you all.

In all honestly, was anyone surprised? It’s been coming for a few weeks. A memorable performance when everyone was on top form and the finishing was first class. We go into the biggest game of the season against Shrewsbury Town on boxing day.

I’m not one for jumping the gun, but if we win on Tuesday, I really can’t see us losing a seven point lead at the top.

Grigg opened the scoring with a smart finish after great work from Gavin Massey and Michael Jacobs down the left, before Nick Powell headed in Lee Evans’ free-kick and Gavin Massey finished off a great move to put the Latics 3-0 up inside 30 minutes.

Grigg completed his hat-trick with two quickfire goals after the interval and substitute Power joined the scoresheet with strikes in the 62nd and 77th minute to maintain their four-point lead at the top of the League One table.

Grigg completed his hat-trick early in the second half. Finishing emphatically after being played through on goal, before stabbing home a cross from Massey.

Max Power waited 20 months for a goal, then three come in one week. The midfielder scored two late goals off the bench, to give Latics their record biggest win of 7-0.

What a performance and result. Unfortunately we don’t get any bonus points for winning 7-0, have to focus on Tuesday now.

Up the ‘tics.
