Latics 1-1 Chelsea

Latics took a fantastic point with a late Jordi Gomez goal as Martinez`s men came from behind against Chelsea.

A highly entertaining game of football saw both sides go close in the first half John Terry fired narrowly wide, Romeu also had a decent effort which was excellently saved by Al-Habsi, whilst at the other end Gomez and Moses both went close without troubling Cech too much.

A big penalty shout near the end of the half after Ivanovic appeared to turn the ball away with his elbow, I`ve seen them given but in truth it would have been harsh, right on the stroke of half-time Dave Jones made a great run down the left and fired across the Chelsea goal line, an in rushing Moses just couldn`t get his toe on the ball to knock it over the line.

The second half saw Latics go close when Gomez fired into the side netting and a Figueroa daisy cutter had Cech grasping to push it out for a corner.

Latics were playing some lovely football, looking composed in possession and threatening on the attack, but it was Chelsea who went in front on 58 minutes. A fantastic cross field pass from Ashley Cole was superbly taken by Sturridge at the Latics back post, he brought the ball down with his left foot and hit a crisp effort with his right into Al-Habsi`s far corner to put Chelsea ahead, 0-1.

Latics pushed for an equaliser and were now having the lion`s share of possession, Rodallega and Di Santo were sent on for Jones and Sammon on 72 minutes, Di Santo went close soon after when following a mistake by Ivanovic, Rodallega challenged Cech, the ball fell back to Di Santo and his shot on the turn was goal bound until Ivanovic managed to get his head in the away and amend for his error by diverting out for a corner.

Di Santo and Rodallega linked up again for the equaliser, the Argentine played a glorious through ball to Hugo who`s first time effort was spilled by Cech, an incoming Jordi Gomez made no mistake and smashed home his 4th goal in five games, 1-1.

A great display from the Latics who played with a fluid formation, a special mention must go to James McCarthy who was absolutely fantastic in centre midfield, more displays like this and the threat of relegation will be a distant memory.

Not happy with our play or that we didn’t get the win but I wanted to come on here and congratulate you guys on a great effort/result. Took part in worbo’s quiz for us Blues. I said you should finish out of the basement again and if you play the way you did, you definitely will.
    All the best!
