Wigan moved to the top of Sky Bet League One after beating Southend 3-0. It was another comfortable victory for Latics, who have won the last six home games consecutively without conceding a single goal,

Michael Jacobs capped his return to the side with a goal, while Nick Powell and Ivan Toney added late goals to make sure of the victory.

An early goal at home has been devoid of Latics in recent weeks, however Jacobs put a stop to that. On 10 minutes, he cracked a shot towards goal which took a huge deflection and wrong footed the ‘keeper.

Southend stood firm following the early goal, and played some decent football without really troubling Jamie Jones. As usual, Latics took control in the second half and killed the game off. Jermaine McGlashan received a straight red card for a lunge on Callum Elder, which provided time and space for Latics to play.

The introduction of Gary Roberts was a great decision, he offered real quality in and around the final third. He played a brilliant through ball to Powell, who rounded the Southend ‘keeper with ease and finished into the empty net.

Roberts got another assist to his name when squaring to Ivan Toney, who composed himself and buried it into the bottom corner making it 3-0.

A fully deserved three points. One of our tougher home games this season, before the red card we didn’t particularly look dangerous going forward. However, Roberts changed the game and provided that quality we lacked. That win puts us top of the league, let’s keep this running streak going on Tuesday.

Up the tics.
