Wigan Athletic Injury Updates

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has given an update on the condition of Latics three injury doubts ahead of the Southampton game, Jean Beausejour and James McArthur

Beausejour missed the season opener against Chelsea with a hamstring injury, Martinez though is hopeful that his left wing back will be available for Southampton: ‘Jean picked up a hamstring injury late last week which ruled him out for Chelsea, but hopefully he’ll be back for Southampton.’

Shaun Maloney had to leave the Chelsea game early, being substituted shortly after the restart for the second half with what was described, at the time, as a dead leg. Martinez is confident that the Latics playmaker will be ready for the weekend: ‘Shaun’s problem is only a knock, it’s not serious, and as long as we treat it well over the next 48 hours he should be okay for Southampton’

James McArthur hasn’t had much preseason due to suffering from a back injury, just a ten minute appearance in the final friendly against Celta Vigo, so it came as a surprise to many when he was named in the starting eleven for the Chelsea game, he was taken off on 80 minutes and I must say he looked shattered

McArthur seems to be giving Martinez the most concern, he said: ‘James was starting to feel his back that has given him a problem in pre-season, but he did so well to last over an hour.

‘We never expected him to last that long, but it shows once again his character and what a strong-minded boy he is.’
