Following Wigan Athletics loss to Manchester City on Monday both managers spoke to the press about what turned out to be a controversial game in the end following the sending off of Gary Caldwell by match referee Stuart Attwell. Lets see what they had to say:
Latics boss Roberto Martinez:
‘The (sending off) decision was a key moment in the game and until that moment we were coping really well with everything Man City had.
‘I felt we were growing into the game, we had a couple of opportunities and felt that the last half an hour was going to be crucial.
‘That decision was a key moment. It really cost us and the game went away from us. To give a red for that, as a referee you need to be very sure. You can’t guess with a decision like that and it is a turning point.’
“The players applied themselves in a great manner, and from an open play point of view we looked dangerous.
“You work extremely hard all week to prepare for a game and when the game is decided by a real footballing injustice it really hurts.
“For the first hour of the game we coped really well with their threat, and we looked a threat when we broke ourselves.
“We created two or three opportunities and you hoped we had enough quality to take them but we just couldn’t.
“With a bit more composure and a clinical touch we could have taken advantage.
“Tactically I thought we were better than Manchester City and we were coping with their threat very well.
“Moments like this are very, very hard to take.
“What we have to do now is react in the right manner, as we always do, and make sure we work even harder to make things happen.
“It’s not been a season of being given things lightly – we have had to work extremely hard for everything we have got.”
City boss Roberto Mancini:
‘It was an important win. It wasn’t easy because Wigan played good football and it was especially difficult in the first half.
‘We improved in the second half and then after the sending off it was too easy. The red card changed the game.
‘Carlos is a fantastic striker and I hope he continues like this in the run-in. If we fight like we did in the second half, we will probably finish fourth.’
