Martinez in Hot Water Over Red Card Reaction

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has been asked by the FA to clarify his comments following remarks made about referee Stuart Attwell who sent off Latics centre back Gary Caldwell in the 3-0 loss at Manchester City.

Martinez branded the match referee a `liar` when he explained his reason for issuing the red card to Caldwell, a decision that altered the course of the game.

Attwell told Martinez that he sent off Caldwell for a two-footed lunge at Carlos Tevez when clearly Caldwell`s challenge was one footed, the Latics boss was obviously incensed by the inexperienced whistle blower`s decision especially as his view of the incident was obscured by other players and he seemed to react to Tevez` actions when he writhed around on the floor as though he`d had his legs broken but the Argentina international jumped up as soon as the red card had been flashed at Caldwell.

Speaking to the press about the sending off Martinez said: ‘I cannot understand how you can give something you can’t see’

‘To give a red card you have to be certain.

‘Gary said he went in really strong and got the ball. Carlos Tevez saw it and jumped off the ground, he is the one who left both feet…

‘We are all human beings and we all make mistakes but to give a decision after something you don’t see that is lying. You are making it up. That is hard to take.

‘He (the referee) said he saw Gary Caldwell with both feet off the ground. That’s why he gave the red card. But Gary Caldwell only went with one foot. That is a real injustice.’

This isn`t the first time Attwell has left a Latics boss fuming, last season West Ham visited the DW Stadium and the young referee totally lost control of the game issuing 2 red and 7 yellow cards, sending off Carlton Cole for 2 marginal yellow-card offences, failed to send off Lucas Neill for a dangerous tackle on Latics Lee Cattermole and then subsequently failed to control the players after sending off Cattermole for a tackle on Scott Parker who rolled about like a fish out of water. Latics boss at the time Steve Bruce said: ‘The game was ruined as a spectacle… In my opinion, Mr Attwell is not ready to step up to the plate.’
