Latics made it through to the 5th round of the FA cup yesterday, an entertaining game saw Crystal Palace beaten 2-1, goals from Ben Watson and James McClean either side of an Aaron Wilbraham effort gave the Latics the upper hand.
The game produced lots of talking points, Palace defender Jonathan Parr was stretchered off on the stroke of half time with what looked like a serious neck/head injury, Dwight Gayle tumbled in the penalty area late on claiming a penalty whilst under pressure from Emmerson Boyce and both keepers pulled off some decent saves, with Ali Al Habsi in particular good form.
Following the game both managers, Uwe Rősler and Tony Pulis, spoke to the media, let’s take a look at what they had to say:
Latics boss Uwe Rősler – ‘Well we valued our chances before the game as 50/50, and both sides fielded strong sides.
‘It speaks volumes that we were able to break through Tony Pulis’ side that have many defensive qualities, and I think we could have put the game to bed fairly early on.
‘In the end, Crystal Palace pushed us all the way to the end, but I’m delighted with how we responded to progress in the competition.
‘If you look at the chances we created, and the quality of those chances, I think it’s clear that we deserved the victory, although perhaps we could have kept the ball a little better in their half towards the end of the game.
‘But we’re working on that aspect, and in the meantime our fitness was good and we held on in the final minutes to secure the win.’
Palace boss Tony Pulis – ‘He’s (Jonathan Parr) gone to hospital for a scan or an X-ray
‘We’ve looked at the incident and we hope there’s a better angle, but it looks as though the lad caught him. The referee’s not far away from that, as he wasn’t far away from the penalty, so it’ll be interesting to see what it shows on TV. He’s a lot closer than what we were.
‘We think it’s the impact (that caused Parr’s injury) but let’s wait and see. We’re not sure if it’s his jaw or his neck at the moment.’
‘When you play in cup ties you need certain decisions to go your way to win games’
‘We knew it was going to be tight and difficult today and one or two decisions didn’t go our way, but that’s what happens.’
