Latics faced Bournemouth at the DW Stadium on Saturday, to say the opening goal of the game was a touch controversial is an understatement, 2 yards off side and the assistant didn’t raise his flag left Malky Mackay gobsmacked and Eddie Howe acknowledging his luck.

Bournemouth showed why they are top of the pile in the Championship with a display of slick passing, great movement both with and off the ball and some clinical finishing. The Latics bedding in new players looked brighter than of late, new signing Kim Bo-Kyung was very energetic in the first half, Chris Herd has a bite in his challenge whilst Leon Clarke grabbed a debut goal. There was also a cameo from 17 year old Sheyi Ojo and whilst he looked raw, he was full of potential.

After the game both managers spoke to the media, let’s take a look at what they had to say:

Latics boss Malky Mackay – ‘We knew we were in for a tough test today in playing one of the best teams in the division and they’re a team that have already had eight away wins’

‘I thought first-half it was pretty even-steven until the goal and, having looked back, we’re disappointed because it’s offside as Yann Kermorgant flicks it on to Callum Wilson who is in an offside position.

‘That’s an error and then that took the wind out of the sails a little bit before we give away a poor goal for their second as we give the ball away right on our own 18-yard line and allow a free shot on goal, you can’t do that against a good team.

‘I thought second-half it was very much even-steven again but the boy Wilson managed to get away for their third and afterwards we came back into it again and had two or three chances ourselves but it’s fine lines and they’re a good team.’

‘We can’t be too disappointed in that today in terms of who we played against and the performance that we gave, we take that into Wednesday’

‘It’s something we’re working towards, they have a lot of strength in a lot of areas; we blooded four or five new players today and I was happy with their contribution.’

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe – ‘With the pitch and the conditions, it was always going to be a battle’

‘But I thought we defied those factors, played some really good football and controlled the game.

‘We played at our tempo and imposed ourselves on them and the goals were a rich reward for our performance.

‘I think it was a different game in the second half, where we didn’t reach the heights of the first.

‘But it was always going to be that way. The third goal killed the game though and from then on we saw it out.’
