The Latics went down 2-0 to La Liga side Real Mallorca at the DW Stadium yesterday in what was a very tame preseason friendly

After the game Roberto Martinez spoke to the clubs official site on where the squad is up to regarding preseason, let’s take a look at what he said:

Latics boss Roberto Martinez‘It was the type of exercise we needed at this point of our pre-season, with many players needing to experience 90 minutes.

‘We were able to that without suffering any injuries and the high standard opposition were the perfect team for us to face.

‘In every game you play you want to win, but the priority was to get players through a full game and see the things we’ve been working on, and I was happy from that aspect.

‘There are still areas we need to improve in, but as a physical exercise the match was a real success.

‘Mallorca were very well organised, particularly in defence and so presented a great test for all the good work we’ve got behind us in pre-season.

‘Now is the period where we need to sharpen up and this game, together with the match at Celta Vigo next Sunday (Sunday 12 August) will help us take another big step forward.’
