Wigan Athletic and Everton played out a 1-1 draw yesterday at the DW Stadium, Everton scoring late on with a penalty from former Latics favourite Leighton Baines, but in all honesty we should have been out of sight before Bainesy got his chance from the spot.
Great midfield performances from James McCarthy, Ben Watson and Tom Cleverley and, before he went off injured, Momo Diame had the Latics in control, some excellent passing moves and comfortable in possession should have been the building blocks to build victory upon and get the three points, unfortunately this season we just can`t finish teams off or seem able to close games down when required and so it proved again.
Nonetheless there were some excellent performances, as previously said the midfield were great, James MacArthur coming on for the injured Diame also played well, at the back both Gary Caldwell and especially Antolin Alcaraz had stand out games, whilst Ali Al-Habsi was good between the sticks, his first half penalty save from Arteta was outstanding.
For me though Ben Watson was our best player for the 90 minutes, he never shied away from the ball, he plays with great responsibility and discipline, his passing was good, he provided a lynch-pin for most of the Latics passing moves, a great game from one of our most under-rated performers.
