Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundit Charlie Nicholas reckons it was a moment of madness that cost Wigan Athletic the points in yesterdays 1-1 draw against Everton.
Everton got the chance to grab an equalising goal in the 78th minute following Hugo Rodallega handling the ball when a corner from Leighton Baines was swung in to the near post. Summarising the game Nicholas said that the Latics had handled the Everton threat up to that point, but in a ‘moment of madness` the nerves got the better of the Latics striker.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday Charlie Nicholas said: ‘It was a simple corner and up to that point they’d handled every single corner ok, Rodallega’s back there – should you have a striker back there?
‘He gets up well and is looking as if he is well above any threat but he just sticks his right hand up and handles it.
‘It was another moment of absolute madness. You think ‘if that’s you feeling the pressure now, what are you going to be like on the last day of the season?’
‘Can they hold their nerve against West Ham? I wouldn’t guarantee it.’
‘The one positive again, though, was Victor Moses who hasn’t really had a great opportunity at Wigan; he really did look lively today’
‘He had three attempts on goal, he was involved in the build-up play; if they were to miss N’Zogbia, this fellow would come straight in because he’s a similar type of player.
‘He may not have the cutting edge that N’Zogbia does but he was a real threat and a menace to Baines.’
