THREE things learnt from Wigan Athletic 2-0 Walsall

1) Will Grigg grabs some much needed goals

I think it`s safe to say we haven`t seen the best of Will Grigg for almost a year? Until now.

Warren Joyce`s seeming ignorance for him, and attacking football for that matter, coupled with a long-term injury towards the end of last season looked to have knocked the stuffing out of him.

However, after almost 12 months without a league goal, he struck in the 3-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers before bagging a brace on the weekend to secure a 2-0 win over his former club.

And to take a penalty off the toes of Nick Powell, who has been inch perfect from the spot this term, speaks volumes of his character, bottle and, most importantly, the potential strike partnership between the two.

2) Defensive trio roll on

Not for the first time this campaign, I thought the majority of the team switched off mentally when we went 2-0 up.

Ideally, you want to see us kick on and grab one or two more goals to put the game to bed. Unfortunately, that wasn`t the case and I`m more than sure that it`s something manager Paul Cook will look rectify on the training ground.

Having said that, we were lucky that three key players kept their concentration, which ultimately preserved another clean sheet.

Centre-back duo Chey Dunkley and Dan Burn won almost every header and timed some last-ditch tackles to perfection, whilst goalkeeper Jamie Jones had yet another solid game, keeping his fifth clean sheet of the campaign on his 300th career appearance. Congratulations, Jamie!

3) We need a wideman

Don`t get me wrong, we have superior strength in depth over the majority of clubs in this division, but I`m an optimist and I always want to see us improve.

With Ryan Colclough mysteriously out of the picture recently (could be something, could be nothing), Gavin Massey yet to find his consistency and Michael Jacobs naturally drifting infield from the left, I believe we need an out and out winger.

And when I say out and out winger, I mean someone like, dare I say it, Yanic Wildschut. Somebody with raw pace who will hug the touchline and look to beat his man in every one on one situation.

We`re going to see a lot more teams defend deep when they come to the DW Stadium and I just think a player of that ilk would help us stretch those type of sides.
