Wigan Athletic suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to high-flying Bournemouth on Saturday as a goal from Lewis Grabban gained all three points for Eddie Howe’s side and concerningly, the away side produced another limp performance as they had done in the Community Shield. Another negative was the sending off of Callum McManaman, despite the controversial nature of the decision.

Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, beat Blackburn 2-0 and will be confident ahead of their trip to the DW Stadium. However, history isn’t much on Doncaster’s side of late, with Wigan having the better of it against their opponents in recent times. That said, it will be a tough game.

Wigan have a few injury concerns, notably to promising defender Thomas Rogne and the long term absences of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis. The ban of Callum McManaman is the only other issue but apart from that, Owen Coyle has a fully fit squad to choose from.

I fully expect Wigan to go with Scott Carson at the back as normal in goal, a back four of Crainey, Perch, Boyce and Barnett, a midfield of Beausejour, McCarthy, McArthur and McLean and an attacking unit of Marc Antoine-Fortune and fan favourite Grant Holt.

Rob’s Prediction: Doncaster will prove no pushovers – I expect them to make a game of it and provide stern resistance but I expect that resistance to be broken. I don’t see this as being a high scoring affair but the Wigan players will want to put things right after, quite frankly, two poor performances away from the DW Stadium.
