David Perkins has agreed a new one year contract extension with Wigan Athletic.

Perkins quickly became a fans favourite after becoming Gary Caldwell’s first signing as manager in 2015, with his terrier-like attitude and high level of stamina.

The 34-year-old played a pivotal role in Wigan winning League One – making 48 appearances in all competitions – and his performances were rewarded with the midfielder winning two Player of the Season awards in 2015/16.

David is, however, yet to score for Wigan with his last competitive goal coming for Barnsley five years ago.

New Latics boss Paul Cook told the club’s official website: ‘As far as the division goes, he`s been there and done it. He clearly keeps himself very fit and I`m sure he`ll continue to be a great asset to the club.’

Perkins added: ‘The new gaffer is top drawer to be fair. I`ve come up against his teams a few times and I`ve heard a few stories about him that he`s straight to the point and no nonsense.’
