Wigan Athletic player Paul Scharner looks all set to finally be about to carry out what he has been threatening to do for the past 3 years and that is leave the Latics for pastures new at the end of the current season.

There is no doubting that Scharner is a character and throughout his time with the Latics he has always played with his heart on his sleeve but if recent comments attributed to him are to be believed then it looks like he as let his ego get in the way.

In the game against Portsmouth at the DW Stadium last Wednesday Scharner was substituted after 58 minutes as the Latics were fighting for a goal against a stubborn Pompey side, instead of urging his team mates on from the touch line the eccentric Austrian not only headed straight down the tunnel to the dressing room but once he was changed he fired off home before the game had finished, charming.

As a consequence of his disappearing act the defender come wannabe midfield man was left on the bench for Sundays fantastic win against Arsenal but he did make the field as he came on as an injury time substitute for Ben Watson and he played the final 2 minutes of the game.

Now the Austria international captain is claiming a host of clubs are chasing his signature and says he has no reason to stay at Wigan, not a great way to be leaving a club that you have spent your best footballing years at and one where you have been named as Supporters Player of the Season in the past, just seems a little disrespectful to me.

Good luck to him and he will go with my best wishes and no hard feelings for Scharner has been entertaining during his time at the Latics, he has also scored some vital goals, the winner in the Carling cup semi-final against Arsenal and the opening goal against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the last game of the season back in 2007 and I for one always felt he had a touch of class about him.

Lets hope he doesn`t leave a bad taste though and he keeps his dignity.

Speaking to the media Scharner is reported to have said: `Fulham, Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland are interested in signing me, which would even guarantee me a spot in Europe. So there is no reason to stay here.’
