Fantastic fightback seals famous win

Latics produced a dramatic last ten minutes at the DW Stadium yesterday to secure all three points in a first ever league victory over Arsenal and in doing so take a significant step towards securing their Premier League future.

Martinez reacted to the poor midweek performance against Portsmouth by restoring Moreno in attack in place of Scotland and handing a rare start to Ben Watson in midfield.

The inclusion of Watson proved to be an inspired one as the young Londoner ran the show and with Diame and McCarthy gave Wigan its youngest midfield since entering the Premier League.

As befits two teams who both have a footballing philosophy the first half was an open affair with attacking flaire from both teams.

In defence for Wigan, Gohuri looked to be forming a good understanding with Bramble although Walcott did his World Cup ambitions no harm with a scintillating performance full of pace and skill.

Both sides had few real chances to score in the first half with the good approach football being wasted in the penalty area and once again Latics seemed to have to resort to shooting from outside the area.

Latics had dominated the first fifteen minutes of play but as the half wore on Nasri and Rosisky gradually asserted their dominance . The opening goal when it came owed more however to the individual brilliance of Theo Walcott, as he cut between two static defenders and threaded the ball between the legs of the advancing Kirkland in the Wigan goal.

It was rough justice on Wigan for a spirited first half and much would depend on the motivational speech of Martinez at half time.

Whatever he said was quickly undone as from a corner with little over two minutes of the second half gone, Silvestre rose unchallenged to head the ball into the net for a two goal lead.

Wigan almost hit back immeadatley when a typical jinking run from N’Zgobia found him one on one with the keeper but a weak shot from the Frenchman was easily gathered by Fabianski in the Arsenal goal.

Wigan continued to look for a way back into the game and Watson had a reasonable shout for a penalty.

Martinez opted to introduce the mercurial Moses for Moreno and the young talent immeadatley slotted in ont he left wing with Rodallega pushing up as a lone forward.

It was Moses who got Wigan back into the game when he pulled a ball back across the area and Watson drileld the shot home through a crowded area.

Many thought that with only eight minutes remainign that this would be a consolation goal but when Fabianski dropped a corner unchallenged Bramble was there to bury it into the net for the equiliser.

Latics still weren’t finished and in the first minute of injury time a wonderful mazy run from N’Zogbia saw him curl a left foot shot in off the post for an historic win
