Wigan Athletic midfield man James McCarthy was absolutely delighted with the Latics 1-0 win against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium that kept the club in the Premier League for a seventh consecutive season.

Speaking to Sky Sports News McCarthy says that the squad always had the belief in themselves and he knew that they could take care of business.

The Republic of Ireland international said that he didn`t know the scores in the other games and was just concentrating on beating Stoke, but once the final whistle went he looked straight over at the Latics bench and when he saw the backroom staff and substitutes running towards him he knew that they`d done it.

Speaking to Sky Sports News McCarthy said: “We always believed in ourselves and we went and done the business”

“It was a bit nervy, but we`ve got a good team spirit, I didn`t know how the other results were going, I didn`t even ask at half-time

“I just focused on our game and I heard a cheer go up in the Wigan end, I thought that was a good sign.

“I just looked over at the final whistle and everyone on the bench was just running at us, we knew we`d stayed up then and what a feeling it was”
