New Latics boss Malky Mackay has cleared the way for the possibility of out on loan striker Grant Holt returning to the club and becoming involved with the first team once more.

It was blatantly obvious that under former boss Uwe Rösler that Holt had no future at the club, he was even excluded from the preseason team photo shoot, but it would appear that Mackay is willing to give him a chance to prove Rösler wrong.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Mackay said that Holt, who is currently on loan at Championship rivals Huddersfield, is ‘a Wigan player, very much so’. With just one appearance for the Latics under his belt this season, as a substitute in the Capital One cup defeat away at Burton, most fans thought his days were numbered, it is nice to see we have a boss who is open minded enough to give everyone a fair crack of the whip.

Speaking to the WEP Mackay said – ‘We’ll have to clear up the terms of the existing loan deal, I’m not too sure on the details

‘But Grant Holt is absolutely a Wigan Athletic player, make no mistake about that.

‘He is someone I don’t know personally, but I do know through my connections at Norwich City – with both of us having played down there – how well he did for them and overall in his career.

‘There’s an understanding from me of what he brings in terms of goalscoring ability, and he’s still a Wigan player, very much so.’
