Wigan Athletic’s French international defender Pascal Chimbonda seems to have had yet another change of heart and could now join Tottenham Hotspur by Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Chimbonda has reportedly made threats to sue Wigan Athletic if they do not sell him to Spurs, who have reportedly made an improved offer closer to the £6 million valuation placed on him by Paul Jewell and Dave Whelan.

Jewell said: ‘I don’t know what Pascal is thinking, one minute he thinks he is staying, the next he might go. My stance hasn’t changed on it, I want him to stay, I would love him to stay, but he has to want to stay. If no one comes in with the money for him, he is not going anywhere.

‘What Pascal did at Highbury last season has been well documented, but that is not the issue any more. The issue now is whether Pascal wants to stay, and if he does he’s more than welcome. It’s one thing a club wanting him and another coming up with the money. If you see a Rolls Royce in the car park, you can say you want it, but you’ve got to have the money to pay for it.’

Tottenham Hotspur have recently also made ‘derisory’ bids for Stuart Downing from Middlesbrough. They seem to work on the theory that if you get a player cheaply then any offer above that should be accepted because ‘You are making a profit’.

Expect an offer of £5 for John Terry of Chelsea next, after all they got him for nothing so £5 is all profit.
