Wigan’s transition this season hasn’t been easy by any stretch after the tense nerves of last season. Then manager Paul Jewell resigned just 24 hours after the Latics avoided relegation with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on the last day of the season.

You couldn’t really blame Jewell, who had carried out a tremendous job at the JJB, gaining two promotions and ultimately maintaining the traditionally rugby league mad town in English football’s top flight for two season.

But at the start of this campaign, the Latics’ were amongst the favourites for the drop as Chris Hutchings promotion from number 2 to manager left little hope in supporters eyes.

By November and Hutchings was gone, replaced by the man who turned around club fortunes following his move from Birmingham City for a second spell in charge – Steve Bruce.

Since his arrival the Latics have kept an impressive home record, with just one goal conceded in their last 7 at the JJB Stadium and now, their Premier League safety is secure with one game to go.

This performance at Villa Park was as impressive by Wigan as it was disappointing from the home team, who still harbour hopes of clinching UEFA Cup football automatically by finishing fifth.

A brace from the sought after Antonio Valencia ensured the victory and meant, despite never really being involved in the relegation dog fight directly, they can rest easy when Manchester United arrive next week for the season finale.

Bruce, speaking after the match, said he was delighted.
