Wigan Athletic are benefiting from Barcelona`s reluctance to take a risk on midfield man Momo Diame following a medical scare with the Spanish giants.

The French born 22 year old has been diagnosed with ‘sudden death syndrome` a condition that his father also suffers from and its been genetically passed onto him.

There is a small chance, 10,000-1 that his heart could stop beating at any time and this fact discouraged Barcelona from taking the talented midfielder to the Nou Camp, no such qualms from the Latics though and boss Roberto Martinez pounced to secure his signature paying Real Vallecano just short of £3million for his services last summer.

Although the medical didn`t go without a hitch, there were one or two things that needed clarifying before the deal went through, Latics chairman Dave Whelan says that he is full of admiration for Diame and that he is a young man with a refreshingly positive attitude and a wonderful outlook.

Diame has gone on to have a fantastic debut season with the Latics making 34 league and cup starts so far and is surely one of the front runners for the player of the season award and Whelan is absolutely delighted for him.

Speaking to the press about Diame Whelan said: ‘I met the lad and he said his life was football. I couldn’t help but admire his courage. He wasn’t prepared to let this sudden death syndrome stop him from becoming a footballer.

‘It was clear all Momo wanted to do was to be out there having the chance to show what he could offer.

‘His refreshing, positive attitude and outlook is wonderful. Lads like this deserve any success coming their way.’
