A Special Mention To… Gavin Massey

It could have been any of the team this week

Following a record-breaking 7-0 away victory at Oxford United, this ‘A Special Mention To…’ could have been the entire squad! But, unfortunately, I have to pick an individual.

Will Grigg bagged a hat-trick and Max Power scored a brace after coming off the bench, however, sorry Will and Max, it’s not any of you!

Instead I’ve gone for someone who, until yesterday, was yet to convince me with his performances in a Wigan Athletic shirt – Gavin Massey.

Massey is still relatively young and has the potential and pace to become a classic winger, but I believe he has often been searching for consistency this season.

The former Colchester United and Leyton Orient man had a belter in the 3-0 away win at Charlton Athletic earlier in the campaign, a game in which he scored twice. Yet, since then, he has been a bit hit and miss for me.

Despite my opinion, the 25-year-old put in a top class performance at Oxford yesterday.

Scoring a goal and claiming two assists seemed to do his confidence the world of good. He frightened the defenders with his pace and took risks, where previously he may have been worried about losing the ball and the fans getting on his back.

Admittedly, I was probably one of the fans getting a bit disgruntled with his performances, but yesterday he showed exactly what he can do when he puts his mind to it; and now I’ll be the first to back him to do it on a consistent basis.
