Wigan Athletic travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day for what is without doubt a very important game for both clubs, though what is in doubt, or at least that`s what I thought, was the game itself.
So, the missus suggested that I`d better get the low down on conditions in the West Midlands and the possibility of the match going ahead or not, whichever the case maybe.
First port of call the BBC and their weather page, Wolverhampton at time of going to press (Thursday 5:30pm), it is -1 but NO snow forecast, though the night time temp is set to plummet to -10.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are set for very similar temperatures, -4 during the day down to -10 at night.
Boxing Day sees a little change though with day time temps climbing above freezing up to a staggering 1 degree, wow.
So quite moderate for kick-off time, but is the pitch playable? Off to Vital Wolves and their editor Akela, who I managed to grab a quick word with for a low down on whether there will be a game on Boxing Day at Molineux.
Akela says: “Game should go ahead according to those who know far more than me regarding the conditions!
“The only thing that could put it in doubt is further snow fall, as long as that doesn’t happen the undersoil heating has been turned up to max and is tropical in comparison to my lawn.”
So looking hopeful, next stop Wolves themselves, no not the furry creatures, the club and more specifically Wolves secretary Richard Skirrow who say`s: ‘We remain optimistic of the game going ahead’
Good, but why are you so confident?
Big Rik continues: ‘The undersoil heating has been switched on for about three weeks – it’s controlled via a thermostat and automatically kicks in as required – and it’s working well.
‘The forecast suggests that we’ve seen the last of the snow before the Wigan game so that should cease to be a problem, although the temperatures on Christmas night are expected to be very cold”
‘The pitch should still cope with that, and providing there’s no more snow, we can make the pitch and the surrounding areas safe.”
So it looks like we will get some football on Boxing Day, fingers crossed for a Christmas cracker
