Wigan travelled to White Hart Lane today determined to avenge last seasons 4-0 capitualtion.
Steve Bruce was forced to make one change with Lee Cattermole’s suspension following his sending off against Sunderland.
Steve Bruce opted to replace Cattermole with the returning Paul Scharner and replacing Kevin Kilbane with the more attacking Jason koumas.

Latics’ also had the unusual situation of having two keepers on the bench, Michael Brown having returned ‘up north’ to be with his wife who had gone into labour.

Spurs started the brighter, looking to improve on their meagre one point this season so far and new signing Pavlochenko had the first real shot but blazed high and wide. This was shortly followed by a good chance for Darren Bent but Kirkland saved well.

As the half wore on Latic’s came more into the game and a powerful Heskey header was well saved by Gomes in the Spurs’ goal.

Latics best chance in the first half came just before half time, when Paul Scharner found himself in space after a clever back pass from Heskey. His shot appeared goal bound but Gomes managed to push it around the post for a corner.

The half tiome whistle brought a chorus of boos from the home fans who were growing increasingly frustrasted at their team’s performance in the first half,in which the Latics who had created very few clear cut chances were the dominating team.

The second half saw Campbell, whom Steve Bruce tried to sign in the transfer window, replace Pavlochenko. Campbell looked sharp and gave Spurs a more dynamic edge. At the back for Wigan however, a superb defence marshalled by Melchiot, dealt with all Spurs could throw at them. The much maligned Titus Bramble espicially was superb.

Ramos brought Aaron Lennon on for David Bentley and shortly after Spurs had what appeared to be a good shout for a penalty, following a clumsy foul by Maynor Figueroa, referee Steve Tanner turning down the claims.

Wigan replaced Koumas with Olivier Kapo and once again he showed what a powerful shot he has forcing Gomes to tip the ball over for a corner.

At the other end Kirkland was forced into a save from the Spurs substitute Tom Huddlestone.

Full time brought a round of applause from the Wigan travelling faithful and another set of grumbles from the Spurs fans who still find their team anchored to the bottom of the league increasing the pressure on beleagured manager Ramos.
