Wigan Athletic manager Chris Hutchings is looking at Preston North End`s Matt Hill to fill the vacant left back spot at the JJB if he can`t renegotiate the Paul Robinson deal with West Brom

Hutch is desperate to bring someone in before the Middlesbrough game on Wednesday

Negotiations have been ongoing with West Brom to pay the fee for Robinson by instalments following his failed medical at Wigan which was first reported here.

Robinson along with Curtis Davies didn`t travel with the West Brom squad to Burnley for the Baggies opening day fixture fuel speculation that both are set to leave the West Midlands this week

Should the Robinson deal fall through again, then expect the Latics to make a move for Preston`s current player of the season, Matt Hill

Hill joined North End in January 2005 from Bristol City and the 26 year old became a permanent fixture in the Deepdale clubs side last season making 41 appearances

Ideally the club should be looking to secure two left sided defenders for competition and for cover, but at the moment I`d settle for one.

Buying from lower league clubs, is that the way forward?
