Wigan Athletic – What A Goal

Maynor Figueroa`s stunning strike for Wigan Athletic in the 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium today had his manager, Roberto Martinez, drooling over the sheer arrogance of the attempt and the technical ability of the Honduras international to pull it off.

For those of you unaware of the goal, the Latics were awarded a free kick when Stoke player Rory Delap fouled Scott Sinclair about 3 yards inside the Latics half and the same distance in from the touchline on the left side of the pitch.

Figueroa approached the ball from an angle looked up to see Stoke keeper Sorensen slightly off his line and hit a thunderous effort from almost 60 yards into the top corner of the net, simply a fantastic strike and goal

Speaking after the game Martinez couldn`t hold back his admiration and said: ‘I think the technicality of it doesn’t surprise me at all because I know how Maynor strikes the ball every day in training’

‘But the football arrogance to make that decision from a free-kick to score is special.

‘From open play you are allowed to be that brave but from a free-kick you have to be a little bit arrogant because you look a fool in front of live television if you don’t hit the target.

‘I think it was a special moment, one of those moments when it is well worth being involved in football.

‘I’m sure we will see that goal time after time and for a goalkeeper the standard of Sorensen to be beaten from that distance it has to be something special.

‘It is just a shame that goal was not part of a winning scoreline.’

Best goal ever by a Latics player? If not it must be pretty close.
