Another week in the close season and another round of names linked with a move to the Latics.

On Friday the club announced their retained list, there wasn’t any real shocks, just Chris McCann and Jordan Flores of the out of contract players offered new deals, no word on any acceptance yet, Leon Barnett, Reece Wabara, Kev McNaughton and Ryan Jennings all leaving on the 30th June when their current contracts run out.

So what’s doing the rounds at the moment with regards to players coming in.

Colchester United midfield man Alex Gilbey looks set to be the next announcement with the club and player close to reaching a deal, though there is also strong interest in the U’s player of the season from Championship rivals Bristol City.

Bolton Wanderers midfield man Darren Pratley is hitting the headlines, mainly in the Bolton press, about a proposed move to the Latics. I may be wrong but this is one that I just don’t see coming off, or indeed us being interested in, 31 years old, he would command a fee and he is reputedly one of the big earners over at Horwich having been with the Wanderers since they were a Premier League outfit. To top it all off he isn’t that good anyway considering what we already have.

A rumour that was quickly quashed by Latics chairman David Sharpe on the Social Media outlet twitter was our reported interest in Watford player Ross Jenkins, an obvious no go so we’ll leave that one there.

Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes was supposedly the subject of a £500,000 bid from the Latics this week, with over 150 games for the Dons since moving from Inverness Caley Thistle, the Dublin born midfielder has enjoyed a good season north of the border, but the rigours of Championship football are far more demanding than the SPL and this rumour doesn’t hold much credence.

Dundee defender Paul McGinn has also been linked with a move south, the right back is out of contract, but with Reece Wabara and Kev McNaughton being released I’d suggest that we are aiming a little higher than McGinn in the quality stakes.

A top rumour over the past couple of days has been the linking of yet another Sunderland player – and another former Scotland international – this time striker Steven Fletcher, a quality goalscorer though somewhat injury prone, Fletcher spent the second half of last season out on loan at French club Marseille, he is out of contract at the end of this month but would command decent wages, at 29 years of age, if he can remain fit, he would be a good signing for any club in the Championship. This is one rumour that I wouldn’t mind being true.
