Latics met Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough yesterday in their latest preseason friendly and came away with an exciting 3-2 victory, the team had a good competitive run out and the new away kit was unveiled.
Significantly though an Egyptian loan signing scored the last goal of the game after coming on as a substitue with 30 minutes remaining, that Egyptian Amr Zaki could well turn out to be the most important player in the clubs history so far.
Zaki is a player with a massive reputation back in Egypt, he is a football superstar in his home land and an international with a fantastic strike rate, if he can carry that strike rate into the Premier League then no doubt the Latics will enjoy their best ever season.
The potential goes much farther than this and it needs the club to act now.
We have three players on board, Zaki and Hondurans Maynor Figueroa and Wilson Palacios who are massive personalities in their native lands and already this site alone has seen a very large increase in activity
We have been told that Wigan Athletic IS the biggest European club in Egypt and Honduras with the interest generated by our wonderful imports, we, the Latics, are now going Global, in a big way.
Wigan Athletic supporters have been increased by millions, when Palacios signed I for one couldn`t believe the interest from Catrachos (Hondurans) in our club but that has been dwarfed by the reaction to the signing of Amr Zaki.
Zaki is, I suppose, the David Beckham of Egypt and we know what the interest is in Becks, the club needs to tap this potential and ensure that Wigan Athletic, the Latics, is a name that flows off the tongue of our Egyptian friends
Yesterday was significant because it was the start of the future, a new chapter in the history of Wigan Athletic and this chapter will be called ‘The Zaki Affect`
