Vital Latics member Sheikh_Mahand takes a look at potential transfer targets that will be on show at Euro2012:
Now then, having kept our manager we can press on and look at potential signings once again. Both Roberto and Jonathan Jackson have stated that they want to tie up three or four players before the European Championships as the players in question may have excellent tournaments and have their value shoot up. With that in mind, I thought I’d have a look at the squads and see which players I think might be on our radar. Here’s what I came up with:
Marcin Kaminski: A 20-year-ols centre back, playing for Lech Poznan. Only broken into their first team this season, and is in the full national squad. I know absolutely nothing about him, but there must be something about him to be called up so young. Fits with the recruitment profile.
Tomas Necid: 22, tall and a striker. The Czech Franco di Santo, if you will. Plays for CSKA Moscow though and plays quite a lot, so might be out of our price range.
Tomas Pekhart: See above really. Very similar player. Started off at Spurs but never played a game, he’s done alright in a struggling team in Germany.
|“I think you can scratch Michael Krohn-Dehli from that list. Definately too good for the Danish ‘Superliga’ on his day, but he hasn’t really done much the past two years.”|
|HAVE YOUR SAY|
Michael Krohn-Dehli: Wide man who’s never really made it outside of his homeland. Spent time at Ajax’s youth academy and with the first team without ever breaking through. They absolutely love him in Denmark, always plays well for the national team. Almost certain we’re looking at him too, as he’s treating this tournament as the one to finally secure him a move abroad.
Miguel Lopes: A right full back, been around the houses a little bit – spending the last season on loan at SC Braga. Spent the season before in Spain with Betis as well, so it’s clear that his parent club Porto don’t need him. Still in the Portugal squad though so he might be a good shout.
Republic of Ireland:
Aiden McGeady: I’m sure we’ve all heard of him, a tricky winger best remembered for his days at Celtic. There have been reports of him being unhappy and homesick in Russia, where he’s playing now (although he has refuted them several times) but the lure of the Premier League might help. Would probably be far too expensive, but if Moses leaves then we would need a replacement. McGeady would be a very good shout.
Kevin Doyle: Another one we’ll definitely know. Scored a pitiful number of goals last season – but then again Cristiano Ronaldo would have struggled under Terry Connor – but I still think he’s got quality we could use. Works very hard and does have goals in him, although he’s never reclaimed the form he showed in his first season in the Premier League with Reading. Again though, Wolves would probably want an extortionate amount for him.
Milan Badelj: A midfielder of real potential, he’s somehow still at Dinamo Zagreb despite playing a starring role for some years now. Thrust into the limelight when Luka Modric was sold, he’s already played nearly 200 times for them – think of him as the Croatian James McCarthy perhaps. I can’t imagine he’s not on the radar of several top European clubs, but if you don’t ask you don’t get.
Denys Garmash: Tall, rangy midfielder currently at Dynamo Kyiv. Hasn’t exactly been a regular throughout his career so far, but looks likely to play a decent part of Ukraine’s Euro campaign. Could be worth a shout to replace Momo Diame – he’s also fearsome from long range.
They’re the only attainable players that I think could be who Wigan are looking at from the announced squad lists, if anyone else can suggest alternatives then feel free. Either way, given that we’ve only got eight days until the start of the Euros we should get some transfer movement pretty quickly!
