The wait is over, the ‘BIG’ football tournament is finally here, Wigan Athletic Walking Football team travel to Burton today, the FA’s National Football Centre at St George’s Park to be precise, to participate in the Football League’s national Walking Football Cup Final.
After battling their way through the Regional heats the Latics Walkers are one of just 10 teams that made it through to the finals and will compete for the title ‘Champions of England’ in the Staffordshire sunshine.
The 10 clubs who have made it all the way are:
Blackpool FC, Bristol Rovers, Colchester United, Middlesbrough, Mansfield Town, Nottingham Forest, Plymouth Argyle, Wigan Athletic, Southend United and Sheffield United.
The ten teams will be split into two groups and play a round robin tournament with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals, the Latics have been drawn against the current cup holders Plymouth Argyle, plus Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Mansfield Town. A tough looking group but there is plenty of quality and tournament experience in the Latics squad, a semi-final spot is the least they will be aiming for.
The competition comprised of 5 regional events with over 60 teams competing, with the top two in each region qualifying for the finals.
I am lucky enough to have been selected for the Wigan Athletic squad and it will be a massive honour representing the Latics and wearing the match kit, there will be a full review of the tournament on Thursday here on Vital Latics, hopefully updates as the tournament progresses via the @LaticsSpeyk twitter account and also a run down on the PWU podcast, of which there will be a special edition this Wednesday.
