Wigan Athletics attempts to sign their long time transfer target, Chile international defender Waldo Ponce, looks to have hit a major stumbling block that`s thrown his imminent arrival in doubt.

Following extensive talks with Ponce`s agent agreeing a package to suit the classy defender it has emerged that Ponce has not played the requisite number of international games to qualify him for a UK work permit and now the deal is in doubt.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez has already turned his attentions elsewhere, Genk`s Joao Carlos being one possible signing, just in case the Ponce work permit issue cant be sorted out.
