The Wigan Athletic squad reported back to the Christopher Park training complex this morning as preseason gets firmly underway with just Mario Melchiot, Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia, Marlon King and Emerson Boyce missing due to an extra weeks break because of their involvement in international tournaments since the season ended.
There were some new faces at the this mornings training session and the return of a familiar one with Henri Camara trying to impress boss Steve Bruce as he returns from his season long loan to West Ham United.
The Latics coaches are using a new piece of equipment this summer, Ice Baths, this assists in conditioning the players by helping to prevent strains and pulls as the early season training hits full throttle.
Latics assistant boss Eric Black spoke about the first day back on the official web site, he said:
“It`s all very scientific these days, we can keep a check on who needs what and how far we can push people.
“The bottom line is we want the players to be at peak performance on August 16th (season start)”
“It`s going to be a tough few weeks for them, but having said that, when you are dealing with Premier League players they are top professionals who keep themselves really fit during the summer months.
“The summer period is more a mental break these days, physically, we`re talking about professional athletes who cant afford to let themselves go”
Well they are back and apparently raring to go, roll on the 16th August and West Ham
