Bruce has been strongly linked with the vacancy and although he has been given permission to speak to them, Mr Whelan informed BBC sport that,’there had been no further developments’.

Whilst some media outlets are reporting that Sunderland are distancing themselves from appointing Bruce, Ian Dennis BBC Radio 5 Live’s senior sports reporter is reported as saying he believes that the deal will go ahead in the near future, with the end of the week being mentioned as an ‘increasing possibility.’

If Bruce does go, then Mr Whelan will move quickly to replace the popular Geordie with ex Latics favourite Roberto Martinez, now manager at Swansea City the fans favourite.

Swansea insist however that they have had no communication from Wigan Athletic.
