Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has put his mouth in gear once more without engaging his brain and his comments concerning Latics boss Steve Bruces outburst during the transfer window seem like a public slap on the wrist
Steve Bruce is proving to be the best manager the club has ever had and we are flying high in the Premier League, so how does the chairman pat him on the back, with a knife firmly clenched in his fist
It is a well known fact that Mr Whelan craves the limelight, his outbursts usually concern the Wigan public and their lack of ‘desire for a Premiership club` has he puts it but this time he is attacking the manager and for what? Being passionate and not wanting to lose one of the best players in the current squad?
In his ‘weekly` column for that well known Wigan newspaper the Manchester Evening News, Mr Whelan claimed that Manchester City were extremely straight and that he told the manager that he was surprised by his comments to the contrary.
Well why are you telling the public Dave, surely that`s a matter for the club, it would have been far better with a less than high profile game coming up at the JJB this Saturday to have talked up the new signings, got fired up with the thought of European football being a possibility and generally used the column to get the Wigan supporters whipped up and clamouring for tickets, but then you`d have nothing to moan about.
There is no denying what Dave Whelan has done for Wigan Athletic but at times he is a PR nightmare and his aversion to controversy and a little bit of attention from the media often undoes all the good work that`s gone before.
Below is and excerpt from the Dave Whelan column in the MEN:
I MUST say, City were extremely straight with us at Wigan when they showed an interest in Wilson Palacios.
I was a bit surprised when our manager Steve Bruce had a go at them – I told him so.
