Prior to one of the biggest games of the season so far, Wigan Athletic v West Ham United at the DW Stadium tomorrow (Sunday), with almost certain relegation riding on the game for one if not both of the clubs depending on the result, you could understand if the managers were getting, well, a little twitchy.
Both Roberto Martinez and Avram Grant have been speaking to the media about the game and what the outcome will mean to either club, let’s take a look at what they said:
Latics boss Roberto Martinez:
“We want to stay up first of all because all the work we have done has not reached its full potential – then it is pride.
“In football, everything is about winning, that is our only goal.
“You can’t do things for fear of losing status at the club, you are doing it for your own pride.”
“Whoever loses the FA Cup Final still goes home with a medal.
“But the stakes in our game are much higher because there is a place in the ¬Premier League on the line.
“It’s what it means for the ¬future – you have to work for 10 months for this.
“You need to grow and react as a group, but with a cup it is just knockout games.
“We are now presented with an opportunity to win our last two games to stay up.”
West Ham boss Avram Grant:
“I hope I never have to experience this again [fighting relegation].’
‘Let’s do our job. We need to do our job because everybody thinks about the other results.
“We play against a team [for] which [this game] is very, very important for them and they are good. So we need first to do our job in their home – we didn’t do it yet – and [then] let’s think about the other results.’
