What the bosses said: Wigan v Liverpool

With pre-season friendlies, every opinion is justified – even the stupid ones. You could lose 10-0 and feasibly play the dreaded ‘oh, but it’s only a warmup’ card. Thankfully, I don’t believe either manager did so on this occasion, making for some eminently readable comments. Here’s what Cookie and Kloppie had to say.

Wigan boss Paul Cook was understandably delighted:

‘That wasn’t a bad start at all, you have to respect the quality and the power of a club like Liverpool but I thought tonight we were excellent, the young lads got great experience, the senior players got more minutes. Really good start for our lads and I thought we gave Liverpool a good game.

‘I don’t like to single players out individually because there were a lot of good individual performances. We created three really good chances in the first half against a very strong Liverpool and it’s the collective spirit that will get us results throughout the season.’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was less pleased but content overall.

‘As you can imagine, I’m not overly excited about the performance, but it`s completely OK. Especially in the first half, we could’ve scored much more goals and second half we could’ve scored goals for sure so that’s OK, but Wigan did a really good job, they have a good side with nice, young players, so it was not that easy. But another game, no injuries, good.’
