It may have been a narrow defeat as the Latics went down 2-1 against Watford at Vicarage Road, but it was still a defeat. A Troy Deeney double sandwiched Chris McCann’s bullet header on the stroke of half time leaving Malky Mackay still searching for his first win as Wigan Athletic manager.

Following the final whistle both bosses spoke to the media, let’s take a look at what they had to say:

Latics boss Malky Mackay – ‘To be involved in the game as much as we were and then lose is something that I’m disappointed about

‘I can’t be too hard on them, though, after playing as they did because I thought we started really well and then I thought Watford came into it and got the goal which was a sloppy one as far as we we’re concerned.

‘As the first-half wore on, I thought we wrestled it back and deservedly got the goal and went in even at half-time.

‘I was happy with how we started the second-half; I thought we had impetus and confidence in the way that we were playing to cause them some problems so to lose a goal was a hard one for them to take because of the amount they’d been in the game.’

‘There has been a lot of work gone in, in the last few weeks’

‘Myself, the staff and the players have been working hard and they applied the game plan really well today.

‘I thought various players caused Watford certain problems but we’ve got to keep putting demands on ourselves to win games.’

‘We’ve played three of the top four clubs in the division in the last few weeks and we’ve been in the games absolutely so that’s what I hold on to in terms of this group of players we`ve got here’

‘It’s just about the fine details and the demands that the players are putting among themselves; they’ve got to keep demanding of themselves so that one little error isn’t costing them the game which it is what’s happened over the last couple weeks.

‘It’s a bit about belief as well, we’ve got to keep believing in ourselves because this is a good group and they’re together.’

Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic – ‘Today was a difficult day for us

‘We didn’t play a brilliant game but it is important for us to win this kind of game.

‘I understand many people expected us to repeat what we did against Fulham but this was a different team in front of us.

‘Wigan played a good game. They didn’t make many good chances but they were fresher, stronger and faster than us for many moments in the game.

‘Really I have to be happy because we have won this game – especially this kind of match.

‘In some games we have lost when we should have won but we didn’t have a brilliant day today but still got the points.’
