Latics were back to losing ways following last week’s good performance and well deserved point against Middlesbrough. Though Chris McCann gave the Latics the lead on 26 minutes, it lasted barely 60 seconds as some comical defending allowed the less than prolific Stevie May the opportunity to pick his spot as he was unmarked six yards out.

May scored his and Wednesday’s second midway through the second half to wrap up the points for the home side, despite creating chances Latics couldn’t convert and with both Delort and Riera once again remaining sat on the bench it appears that the second manager this season is left scratching his head as why either of these two were signed.

Following the game both bosses spoke to the media, let’s take a look at what they had to say:

Latics boss Malky Mackay – ‘We’ve had a good chat as a team in there’

‘It was a disappointing result and I’m disappointed for the players in there because they’ve put an awful lot in to the game and they’ve had terrific chances.

‘But through our own mistakes, and two poor decisions from a couple of players for each goal, it’s led to them scoring goals against us.

‘Especially the second one because we controlled most of the second-half and it was the only chance on our goal after we`d had various attempts on their goal.

‘I’m really disappointed for them after we came up here and played the way we did.’

‘We’ve got to be better at making sure we actually keep the lead; that’s about game management and that’s something that we’ll work on in the weeks going forward because we’d been comfortable up to that point.

‘To give such a sloppy first goal away [was disappointing], we’ve got three men running to the ball and that’s about communication which is something else we’ll work on.’

Wednesday boss Stuart Gray – ‘I think we thoroughly deserved the win today.

‘When it (May’s header for the second goal) hits one post, hits the other post, I’m just looking straight away at the linesman to see the flag go up.

‘I kept saying to the players, the harder you work, the luckier you’ll get and maybe that’s the little bit of luck we deserved today because we didn’t get it last week at Huddersfield.

‘It has been a long time coming. You gentlemen (the media) kept on reminding me it was no wins in 10, now we’re unbeaten in four.

‘You’re always under pressure if you’re not winning games but one thing I did know the team spirit is excellent. I work with these boys every day and they put an unbelievable shift in in training and I’m a great believer if you do it right Monday to Friday, you’ll do it right on a Saturday.

‘What I keep saying to the players is you fail on ability not application and you can’t fault the players’ application.’
