Wigan Athletic travelled to Old Trafford yesterday and once again came unstuck, poor refereeing, sloppy play and jaded looking Latics in the second half saw Manchester United secure a comfortable 4-0 win, sounds all too familiar

After the game both managers spoke to the press, let’s take a look at what they had to say:

Latics boss Roberto Martinez

‘I have come to United three times before today and for whatever reason we don’t seem to be measured in the same manner as the team at home.

‘Today the penalty is as bad a decision as you are going to see in the Premier League.

‘In many ways, you feel as though you are fighting against a mountain.

‘There were tackles flying around that if they had been the other way round there would have been a couple of red cards.’

“We wanted to get ourselves in front which is crucial when you come to places like this. We get ourselves into good positions going forwards and created the chances that we had to take.

‘But at the other end we conceded goals too cheaply and it affected us too much which is something we need to learn from.

‘We’re very disappointed at the manner in which we conceded the goals because throughout the first half we defended very well, went forward well and created good chances, disrupting Manchester United’s tempo.

‘The second half was disappointing though; one goal comes from a short corner that we should have dealt better with and another is when a full-back goes through the defence too easily, which shows our minds were more focused on scoring than defending.

‘Overall though I’m pleased with the players’ attitude and their approach which had a big say on the game for long spells.’

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

‘We had to start all over again after the missed penalty.

‘They slowed the game down a lot, but we weren’t playing at the speed we play at. The second half we did after becoming more aggressive and played some penetrating football.

‘Wigan play a a system which is difficult to play against. It is a good result.’
