Latics and Everton fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium on Saturday, four goals, a penalty, quite a bit of falling about and some proper whinging going on in the ref’s ear

The Latics took the lead on two occasions only to be pegged back both times, there were chances missed at both ends, a draw was probably the fair result, but it never feels that way when you concede late, especially to a penalty

Following the game both managers spoke to the media, whilst Martinez concentrated on the game, Moyes had one last moan, lets see what they had to say:

Latics boss Roberto Martinez – ‘There’s a feeling of disappointment because we conceded so late in the game, but I’m very pleased with the performance of the team.

‘The first-half saw an excellent game of football that we were the better side in, controlling Everton and creating very good chances.

‘If there’s any criticism then it’s for the way we defended in the build-up to Everton’s first equaliser; we’re better than that and apart from that goal we looked really solid at the back.

‘Our play showed invention and real variety with Shaun Maloney, Arouna Kone and Franco Di Santo playing at such a high level and looking very dangerous whenever they were in the final third.

‘Everton are a team playing with real confidence and momentum, but we matched their intensity and in the second-half we coped with their pressure really well.

‘We needed that two-goal cushion and we had chances before their late penalty, but overall it’s a performance that will kick start our season, playing the bigger role in the first-half and then in the second showing signs of how tough we can be, which is very pleasing.’

Everton boss David Moyes – ‘I think Roberto has done a good job over the last few days of making sure that the referees gave them what was required.

‘We found it really hard to play against Wigan and then we also found it hard the way the decisions went.

‘Yes, we can approach (referees’ chief) Mike Riley and I`m sure other clubs do, but he has to look at the people who are working for him and whether they are doing well enough.’
