Following yesterdays defeat at the DW Stadium by Swansea, Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez spoke to the press:

“I hold my hands up, I got that one wrong

“I thought we could get away with leaving the clubs three most creative players on the bench and putting a team out with no pace, no ability to run with the ball and a forward line so wide apart they played like two wingers”

“I should have changed it after 10 minutes, that’s when it was blatantly obvious that my selection wasn’t working”

“Rest assured for the remaining eleven fixtures I will play my strongest team possible, regardless of any little spats I might have had with the players, and we will be doing our upmost to win every game”

Nah, he didn’t say that, what he did say was:

“…it wasn’t ideal to have so many players travel around the world in the week on international duty as we prepared for a game that had a real need for three points.”

‘I thought we started the game bright enough inside the first 10-15 minutes; we got on top but started to fade slightly and couldn’t find the extra energy needed with so many of our players playing through the week.”
