Wigan Athletic look set to take a gamble on Watford youngster Rob Keirnan who rejected a new two year deal at Vicarage Road last week and left the club as a free agent.

The 20 year old centre back is a Republic of Ireland under 19 and under 21 international but failed to make a league appearance for Watford, though he spent time on loan at Kilmarnock, Yeovil Town, Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers.

Kiernan is represented by former Latics captain Matt Jackson and it would appear that Jacko has given his old mate Roberto the nod on the youngster, who even though he has been at Watford since he was nine years old, is available without a fee being involved.

Speaking to the St.Albans Review, Watford`s head of football business Ross Wilson explained: “As he is under 24, this means he has the option to leave.

“Rob is now free to join another club without any compensation being due.

“We wish him all the very best for his future career in football.”
