Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero’s, these are being published in no particular order:

Peter Houghton

Peter was born in Liverpool in 1954,on leaving school he played in local amateur football before being spotted by Mid-Cheshire League Prescott Town in 1973. Whilst at Prescott Peter won a title medal, being their top scorer that season.

He signed for South Liverpool FC of the Northern Premier League in 1976. Peter signed for Latics in early 1978 playing 17 games and scoring 9 goals in our final season in the NPL. Incidentally he was replaced at South Liverpool by a young lad named John Aldridge!

Peter played in Latics first ever football league game at Hereford and had the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed.

Peter made 202 appearances for Wigan scoring 71 goals. In October 1983 Peter left to join Preston, followed by spells a Chester and Wrexham (loan) before slipping into non league with Runcorn.

Peter Houghton will be remembered by Latics fans for his `bustling, get stuck in` style, not the biggest centre forward, but fearless. A true Latics legend.
