Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero’s, these are being published in no particular order:
Appearances – 69
Goals – 19
Position – Striker
Best Moment – Part of the 1982 Division 4 promotion winning team
The raw 17 year old Micky Quinn joined Wigan in 1979 after a relatively unsuccessful stint with Derby County. At such a young age, expectations of Micky were not too great but during his 3 years with the blues he slowly made his mark on the team and delivered a healthy strike rate of almost 1 in 3.
He helped the team to the Division 4 title in 1982 but that was to prove to be his downfall at Wigan. Larry Lloyd, the Wigan manager at that time felt that Micky did not have what was needed to play in the 3rd division and allowed him to go to Stockport County on a free transfer. What a mistake!
In the following 10 years, Micky was prolific wherever he went which culminated with a 3 year spell at Division 1 team Newcastle United where he scored many goals and became a fans favourite.
He was one of the most dangerous strikers of his time both in England and abroad. Today he is a racehorse trainer and can also be heard on the airwaves as a presenter on Talksport where he very often reminisces about his time at Wigan Athletic.
