Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero’s, these are being published in no particular order:
Colin Methven was born in India in December 1955,his parents were Scottish and were based in India at the time.
Colin and his parents returned to Leven in Scotland where Colin grew up. He played junior football for Leven Royals before signing for East Fife at the age of 17.
He went on to captain East Fife and made 154 appearances for the Methil side scoring 15 goals.
In September 1979 Colin signed for the Latics for £30,000 where he stayed for seven years and made 296 appearances scoring 21 goals. It was a surprise to everyone at Latics when as club captain he signed for Blackpool in 1986 for a fee in the region of £20,000.
Colin was the mainstay of the Latics defence during our `glory years` 79-86. It`s no coincidence that once Colin left the fortunes of Latics started a downward spiral.
For the older Latics fans Colin Methven will always be regarded as a Latics legend, he was no `fancy dan`, just a solid, dependable defender who gave his all.
Colin went on to play for Carlisle, Walsall and Barrow before retiring in 1994.
In 1998 he was voted best Latics football league player of all time by Latics fans.
