Take that, pesky random fixtures generator! Us humans are wresting back control, as two of the League One games involving Latics you spat out have been shifted ever so slightly.

First up, an unexpected bout of Friday Night Football will be arriving at the DW Stadium over the Christmas period. Wigan v Charlton has been brought forward from 3pm on Saturday 30 December to 7:45pm on Friday 29 December.

But this is (probably) not for the benefit of television networks – it’s to allow recuperation time for Latics’ showdown with Northampton Town on New Year’s Day 2018. So you don’t have to change out of your fancy dress for the game dubbed ‘Boxing Day II’ by absolutely nobody.

I trust you’ve already modified that game on your fixtures card with permanent marker, because here comes the second alteration.

The match against Blackburn at Ewood Park was initially slated for 3pm on Saturday 3 March 2018, but it has been put back exactly 24 hours to 3pm on Sunday 4 March. This is to accommodate policing, with local rivals Burnley playing at home on 3 March.

It’s a sad fact, but Premier League clubs seem to take precedence in these situations. We only hope Latics don’t experience the same with a certain Horwich-based Championship club.

Hopefully these latest alterations haven’t ruined your carefully constructed travel schedules for the new season. The meticulous planners among you should be warned: there may be more changes to follow…
