Latics fans: this is the perfect opportunity to practice strutting down the boardwalk! The twinkling twilight of Southport Pier gleefully awaits your shimmering new plimsolls and Will Grigg-related ditties.

By the time Blackpool away appears on the horizon, you’ll be a true veteran of wharf waddling, quay yomping and… er… jetty jumping?

Because you’ll have already done it prior to Wigan’s pre-season friendly with Southport FC on Tuesday 18 July.

You might know it as Haig Avenue, the Merseyrail Community Stadium or that place where ‘Our Jimmy’ practiced a spot of streaking that time. Not that we condone such activities, of course – never trust another individual with your underpants while you’re waltzing around in the nuddy.

But Southport’s Blowick-based stadium is the only place to buy tickets for this sandy-toed showdown. In other words, Latics supporters can pay on the night, and admission is £5 (£3 for juniors).

If you’re making plans, I recommend wheel-based transport. We once knew a couple of guys that decided to walk from Wigan to Southport. When they realised they wouldn’t make it before nightfall, they decided to start jogging.

They reached the ground three days and four worn soles later, having missed a good 16 hours of work responsibilities.

So let this be a lesson – start jogging as soon as you leave the house.
