Eurika! Cried the head grounds man, the new pitch is laid and nailed down in time for Saturday’s battle of the Latics.

Following the devastation to the playing surface at the DW Stadium caused by the incessant bad weather over the past couple of months, with Gary Caldwell’s Latics preference to play a passing game with the ball along the ground, it was decided to take the plunge and rip up the pitch and get another laid in time for the visit of Oldham Athletic.

Work began on Monday and with the DW Stadium ground staff and turf contractors Talbots working flat out it’s been a case of out with the old and in with the new in record time.

Latics CEO Jonathon Jackson said – ‘Ideally, Head Groundsman Ian Forshaw and our sports turf consultants would need more time than a week to prepare a new playing surface, but our thanks go to them for the work they have put in this week. It has been a marvellous effort.’

The markings were being put down today and it is all systems go for tomorrow.
